Police, PTI supporters clash as protest called off

Roads blocked in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, police use tear gas shells and batons to stop PTI supporters from Liaquat Bagh.

RAWALPINDI: Police and workers of PTI spent Saturday in a hide-and-seek drama in Rawalpindi, Islamabad and other nearby cities.

The PTI had announced that it would hold a protest demonstration in Liaquat Bagh Rawalpindi today. After the announcement, the police started blocking roads and arresting workers and supporters of the political party founded by jailed for prime minister Imran Khan.

Because of the entry and exit points of Rawalpindi and Islamabad as well as men roads inside the two cities Republic face lots of hardship. Ambulances carrying patients were also not allowed to reach hospitals or leaving hospitals for their homes.

A cardiologist told a TV channel that he could not move out of his home and reach the hospital and had to cancel appointments with patients.

As the PTI supporters tried to reach Rawalpindi by removing hurdles and blockage of road the police used tear gas shell and batons to disperse them. The police also arrested a number of PTI workers and shifted them to different police station in Rawalpindi.

According to TV reports, the police also beat up and snatched cameras and mobile phones from TV reporters at the toll plaza near Islamabad.

The chief minister of KP Ali Amin Gandapur was leading a convoy of people to join the protest in Rawalpindi. However, before reaching the venue of the protest, he was informed by the PTI chairman Gohar Ali Khan that the protest had been cancelled.

When the chief minister informed his supporters about the decision, they held a protest and encircled his vehicle asking him not to go back.
