UN experts’ report on Balochistan one-sided: FO

ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office on Thursday said that a recent assessment of the situation in Balochistan by some UN experts was based on one-sided and unsubstantiated media reports.

Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan said that it is important to keep objectivity, accuracy of facts and full context in public statements. The comments of UN experts are not balanced, he said, adding that civilian casualties in terrorist attacks had been underestimated in the province. Miscreants are deliberately disrupting public services and creating obstacles in the free movement of citizens.

Crimes and human rights violations committed by miscreants cannot be ignored. He said that collusion with terrorists under the guise of protests had been proven, while systematic barriers were being erected to prevent state actions. He said that road closures and other subversive activities to support terrorists were unacceptable.

The Foreign Office spokesperson said that the raid on the District Hospital Quetta and the forcible seizure of the bodies of five alleged terrorists was evidence of the nexus of miscreants and terrorists. The police have recovered three of the bodies, he said, adding the rule of law will be ensured at all costs. International laws do not allow any individual or group to use human rights as a weapon. States have full authority to take necessary measures for the protection of citizens and maintenance of law and order.

Shafqat Ali Khan said that the government will fulfill the responsibility of protecting the lives and property of the people, especially in the areas affected by terrorism. Pakistan is committed to the policy of providing equal opportunities for the development and prosperity of all citizens, and there is no scope for any concession or amnesty for terrorists and their facilitators.

He added that all actions of the government are in full conformity with international law. Every citizen has full right to legal recourse under constitutional rights. Pakistan is ready for constructive dialogue with UN Special Rapporteurs.
