WASHINGTON: The State Department has expressed the hope that President Donald Trump would be able to help resolve the Kashmir issue during his tenure as he helped a ceasefire between Pakistan and India.

State Department spokesperson Tami Bruce during a media briefing stated that the U.S. supports the ongoing ceasefire between India and Pakistan, and thanked God that such a ceasefire continues to hold between two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Bruce confirmed that Under Secretary for Political Affairs Alice Hooker met with the Pakistani delegation led by Bilawal Bhutto, and discussed bilateral relations, including counterterrorism cooperation.

When asked whether Pakistan provided any assurances about acting against terrorist groups, Bruce declined to comment on the specifics of the conversation.

In response to a question about the U.S. role in mediating the Kashmir dispute, especially in light of President Trump’s earlier offer, Bruce did not confirm any direct mediation steps, but reiterated that the U.S. hopes the issue can be resolved peacefully, and that President Trump remains hopeful for progress during his presidency.
