Entering into deal with IMF for three years: PM

Tells presser in Islamabad that his party took political risk but saved the state interests.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday said that there was nothing to shy away from the fact that the government was entering into a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad today, the prime minister said that his party took the risk of its political survival by forming a government when the PTI was ousted through a no-confidence movement in order to save the country from economic collapse.

He said when the prices of petroleum products were rising in the international market, the then prime minister Imran Khan announced to reduce the POL prices causing irreparable financial losses to the economy. 

The prime minister added that PTI had come to power with tall claims including its promise yo eliminate corruption in 90 days but after assuming power it pocketed 190 million pounds of the nation.

He said that despite the economic mess left behind by the PTI, his party took steps irrespective of their political consequences and put the country on sound economic track and stabilized the prices of essential food items.

He said that despite IMF conditionalities the government was going to provide relief to poor segment of society. He said that about 28,000 tubewells being used in the agriculture sector would be linked to solar power in order to minimize cost of electricity.

He said power consumers using up to 200 units per month would be provided relief for three months.
