PARACHINAR: The grand Jirga formed to resolve issues between two tribes has failed to reach any deal to ensure restoration of peace in the troubled Kurram district of Khyber Pakthunkhwa.
The Jirga was formed after tribes rival to each other over sectarian affiliation killed over 100 people for the last over a month. Over 50 people were shot dead when armed persons opened fire on passengers travelling in convoys between Peshawar and Parachinar last month.
Though the warring tribes have agreed to a ceasefire and there have been no incidents of firing for over week to give the Jirga a chance to gave an agreement between the tribes, Roads to the area including Parachinar-Peshawar highway, remain blocked for weeks.
As a result, there have been shortages of essential commodities like fuel and edibles. Officials said that liquified petroleum gas ran out in the area and as a result all Tandoors and restaurants were closed.
MNA Hameed Hussain told media that ensuring the main Parachinar and Peshawar highway safe for travel was vital for durable peace in the region.
According to reports, the Jirga was still in Kurram and continued efforts to end tension by reaching be a consensus agreement between the tribes.
