Unity Democratic Group makes clean sweep in press club polls

PESHAWEAR: M. Riaz has been elected as the President of the Peshawar Press Club in the annual elections. His Unity Democratic Group achieved a clean sweep by securing victory in all positions.

The elections were held on Saturday under the supervision of the election committee chaired by Shahid Hameed. Members of the journalist community participated enthusiastically, with one-on-one contests for all positions.

For the presidential seat, M. Riaz of the Unity Democratic Group secured 350 votes, while his opponent, Nasir Hussain of the Progressive Journalists Group, managed only 97 votes.

Candidates from the Unity Democratic Group also excelled in other positions. Irfan Khan, Bureau Chief of Azad Digital, secured 314 votes for Vice President, while Tayyab Usman achieved a decisive victory for the position of General Secretary. Gulzar Muhammad of Jang newspaper obtained 310 votes for Joint Secretary, and Ehtesham Khan of Express News won the Finance Secretary position with 312 votes.

After the results, Mr. Riaz stated that the primary goal for the year was to strengthen the PPC as an institution and advance its core agenda, including promoting press freedom, safeguarding civil rights, supporting the Journalist Welfare Project, and amplifying the voices of the marginalized.

Supporters of the Unity Democratic Group expressed their joy over the victory and voiced their expectations for the newly elected cabinet to take effective measures to address journalists’ issues.
