Pakistan warns against Indian bid to change Kashmir’s demography

Foreign secretary says New Delhi violating UNSC resolutions by denying Kashmiris right to self-determination.

GENEVA: Foreign Secretary Muhammad Sajjad Syrus Qazi has warned that in blatant violations of the United Nations Security Council resolutions, India has been carrying out atrocities on the people of occupied Kashmir besides trying to change the demography of the area.

Speaking at the 55th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, he said political and demographic engineering of occupied territory is being carried out by the world’s self-professed largest democracy through an outsized military presence and draconian laws.

He said under a nefarious plan, the Indian government had abolishes a law to allow outsiders to settle in the occupied territory with the sole aim of turning the majority Kashmiri people into a minority at their own land.

Under the UNSC resolutions, a plebescite was to be held in the occupied territory under the UN to allow the Kashmiri people to decide about their future. However, with the deployment of over half a million troops India has been perpetrating atrocities on the Kashmiris and the world remained a silent spectator.

The foreign secretary demanded the UN High Commissioner’s Office to continue monitoring the situation in occupied Kashmir and produce a third Kashmir report in exercise of its prevention mandate.
