Several injured as protesting lawyers clash with police in Lahore

Lawyers up in arms against shifting of civil courts and terror cases against colleagues.

LAHORE: Several people were injured when lawyers clashed with police while holding a protest at GPO Chowk in Lahore on Wednesday.

The lawyers were holding the protest against shifting of civil courts and registration of a terror case against some of their colleagues. When the protesters tried to enter the Lahore High Court, over 1,000 police personnel deployed there stopped their way leading to a clash.

The police men were pelted with stones by the protesting lawyers and in reply the police used tear gas shells to disperse them. However, the lawyers continued attacking the police and some of them entered the premises of the high court and forced a judge and litigants to leave the court room.

The lawyers said that they would continue their protest until acceptance of their demands and refused to talk to the deputy inspector general of the police operations, Lahore.

Because of the protest, traffic flow in the city was badly disrupted and the metro station in the area was closed. Traffic on Mall Road and other arteries also remained blocked.

The police said they were exercising restraint and had to use tear gas shells after police pelted them with stones.
