KABUL: Flash floods triggered by torrential rains in the Afghan province of Nangarhar killed over 40 people and injured more than 300, according to media reports on Wednesday.
Save the Children, an international nongovernmental organization working for the rights of children, said that at least 1,500 children were also missing after the deluge. It said the children either lost contacts with their families or were swept away.
According to the Afghan media, the floods have damaged houses, crops and killed hundreds of animals in different villages of the province where communication network is already poor.
Immediate assessment of the damages caused to the public and private properties was yet to be carried out.
Officials said that communication with the affected people was difficult due to blockade of roads. Many people were in urgent needs of essential food items but they could not be accessed as roads in the area were also damaged
