Border Military Police Inducts Women Officers After 100 Years

KARACHI: In a groundbreaking development, the Border Military Police (BMP) has inducted women officers for the first time in over a century, marking a transformative step in policing within South Punjab.

This initiative aims to uphold women’s rights in conservative areas and enhance the BMP’s capacity in law enforcement, particularly in countering terrorism, smuggling, and securing border zones.

For years, the lack of female officers made it difficult to properly investigate crimes against women in remote communities. The inclusion of women is expected to address this long-standing gap and improve access to justice.

Following a 27-year pause in recruitment, the BMP has resumed hiring with a focus on gender inclusion. The latest recruitment drive took place in South Punjab, specifically targeting candidates from Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur, districts located in the tribal belt along the western border of Punjab. A total of 40 women were recruited from Dera Ghazi Khan and 12 from Rajanpur.

This marks a significant move toward greater diversity and effectiveness in a force long dominated by men.
