Canada to Recognize State of Palestine at UN in September

OTTAWA: Canada will recognize the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly meeting in September, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday.

The move increases international pressure on Israel as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens.

The decision comes amid growing concern over starvation in Gaza and follows similar announcements by other major countries. Last week, France said it would recognize a Palestinian state.

On Tuesday, the United Kingdom stated it would do the same at the UN meeting if the fighting in Gaza does not end by then.

Gaza, home to more than two million people, has been heavily affected by months of Israeli military operations. Aid agencies have reported widespread hunger, lack of medical supplies, and rising civilian casualties, prompting calls for an immediate ceasefire and expanded humanitarian access.

Carney said the recognition is part of Canada’s broader commitment to a two-state solution and a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

He urged both sides to return to negotiations and called on the international community to support efforts toward lasting peace in the region.–Reuters
