ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has nominated Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the new Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.
According to PTI sources, Imran Khan conveyed this decision to party leaders and visitors during a meeting at Adiala Jail. The move comes in the wake of the disqualification of PTI leader Omar Ayub, who previously held the position of opposition leader.
Ayub, along with Senator Shibli Faraz, was sentenced in cases related to the May 9 riots by an anti-terrorism court.
Following the verdict, the Election Commission of Pakistan issued notifications of their disqualification, resulting in Ayub’s removal from the post of opposition leader as well as from the Public Accounts Committee and all other standing committees of the National Assembly.
Both Ayub and Faraz have challenged their disqualification in the Peshawar High Court.
The nomination of Mahmood Khan Achakzai marks a significant shift, as he will now represent the opposition benches in parliament on behalf of the PTI and its allies.
