Naanbais announce strike in Punjab, KP on 8th

Says govt should fix rates on basis of ground realities and in consultation with tandoor owners.

ISLAMABAD: The All Pakistan Naanbais Association here on Thursday announced to hold a shutter-down strike in Punjab and KP against the recent reduction in prices of naans by the government.

Speaking at a news conference, association’s president Shafiq Qureshi said that the government while bringing down the rates did not look into the ground realities. He said cost of business had gone up with electricity and gas tariffs remaining high.

He said it was the responsibility of the government to provide relief to the people but it should not be a robbery on the pockets of tandoor owners.

It may be mentioned here that the government has recently reduced the rates of naan from 25 to 20 and roti from 20 to 16 rupees after reduction in the prices of wheat flour.

However, the tandoor owners are not ready to bring down the rates. The government has also launched a crackdown and arrested some leaders of the naanbais in Punjab.
