Pakistan, Turkiye call for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif meets Turkish President Erdogan on sidelines of UNGA session.

NEW YORK: Pakistan and Turkiye on Wednesday called for an urgent humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza war which has continued since October last year.

The demand was made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York.

Prime Minister Sharif appreciated the Turkish president’s unequivocal support for the people of Palestine and his hard-hitting speech at the UNGA.

He also paid tribute to the Turkish leadership and the people for their longstanding support yo the oppressed people of Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The two leaders discussed the Gaza war and expressed their concerns over the massacre of the Palestinian people and the inability of the international community to stop the Israeli brutalities.

The prime minister and the Turkish president also discussed bilateral relations in different sectors. discussed the bilateral matters, regional and global developments, according to a PM Office press release.

The preparations for the upcoming session of Pakistan-Türkiye high level strategic cooperation council to be geld in Islamabad soon also came under discussion.

Speaking to media after the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif said that the way the Turkish President spoke on the Palestinian issue touched the hearts of all those present in the UNGA hall. He congratulated the Turkish president on this.

The prime minister said that Pakistan and Turkiye had close bilateral ties, adding the Turkish president would soon visit Pakistan.

He also said that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) board would hold its meeting tomorrow. The IMF had presented very tough conditions and Pakistan has fulfilled all of them.

He said that Pakistan was very close to enter into an agreement with the IMF, adding without support from China, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates this could not have been possible.

Some of the conditionalties of the IMF related to China and the Chinese government as usual came to the help of Pakistan, the prime minister added.
