Pakistani among Sydney knife attack victims

Five of the six victims were women, say police.

SYDNEY: A Pakistani national was among the six victims who were stabbed to death by a knife-wielding man in Sydney Australia two days back.

The Australian Pakistani National Association said Faraz Tahir, 30, identified today. He worked in Sydney as a security guard.

The assailant was shot by a police officer after he attacked shoppers in the busy Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre, police said in a statement.

Police have named the assailant as 40-year-old itinerant man Joel Cauchi who was previously diagnosed with a mental health issue.

Five of the six victims killed were women, while eight people, including a nine-month-old baby, were taken to hospital with stab wounds, New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb told a press conference.
