PTI directly involved in May 9 violence, cabinet told
Members demanded strict action against those involved in attacking military installations.
ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet held a special meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in connection with the anniversary of May 9, 2023, violence.
Federal Minister Azam Nazir Tarar presented a report before the cabinet which stated that the PTI was directly involved in the May 9, 2023, arson attacks on military installations in reaction to the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan.
According to sources, the report was prepared by a special committee formed by the cabinet on the incidents of May 9.
The cabinet decided to make law to bring it all those involved in the vandalism to book. Some members of the cabinet demanded that strict action should be taken against the responsible persons under the existing laws.
Meanwhile, the government announced to observe May 9 as the martyrs day.
President Asif Ali Zardari in a statement said those responsible for the May 9 violence should be held a countable according to law. He termed the mob attacks as an attempt to challenge the writ of the state.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a post on X states, “This day separates two thoughts of politics, one those who sacrificed politics for the state and the other who attacked the state for sake of politics.”
