World intervention must to resolve Kashmir issue: speakers

Pakistan Consulate General in New York holds Kashmir Solidarity Day event to renew support.

NEW YORK: Speakers at a Kashmir Solidarity Day event held at the Pakistan consulate general in New York called upon the international community to pressure India to stop human rights violations in the occupied Kashmir and give the right of self-determination to the Kashmiris.

The event aimed at expressing unwavering support for the oppressed Kashmiris living in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Opinion leaders, scholars, students, journalists, distinguished members of the local community, Kashmiri diaspora and individuals committed to raising awareness about the human rights violations attended the event organized by the consulate general of Pakistan. 

Speaking on the occasion, Consul General of Pakistan Aamer Ahmad Atozai highlighted the over seven-decade-long sufferings of the Kashmiri people, who have been denied their fundamental rights.

He emphasized the United Nations’ commitment to a plebiscite for the people of IIOJK to exercise their right to self-determination. He also urged the attendees to actively participate in various activities to raise awareness about the plight of Kashmiri people. 

Other speakers including Dr. Asif Rehman, Carin Jodha Fischer, Dr. Sima Karetnaya, Mr. Zameer Ahmad, Mr. Taj Khan, Sardar Sawar and Mr. Saghir Khan called for international intervention to resolve the issue and pressed concern over Indian high-handedness in Kashmir and its impact on the region’s stability.

It was also reiterated that the only way to lasting peace in South Asia is by granting the people of the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir their inalienable right to self-determination as pledged to them in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. 

A call was made to the international community, including the UN, to take immediate cognizance of the worsening human rights situation in IIOJK, to listen to the voices of the oppressed Kashmiris, and to help them in their just and legitimate struggle for their right to self-determination.
