NEW YORK: Ahead of early voting for New York City’s mayoral election, Muslim candidate Zohran Mamdani addressed supporters outside a Bronx mosque, sharing his personal experiences and pledging a message of unity in the face of hate.
Emotional during his speech, Mamdani reflected on the post-9/11 challenges faced by American Muslims. He recounted how his aunt felt unsafe wearing a hijab after the attacks and described how the community has struggled with prejudice in the years since.
Mamdani also criticized his opponents for attempting to portray him as a terrorist, saying, “They tried to paint me as a terrorist, but I stand here with a message of unity against hate.”
The New York mayoral election is scheduled for November 4, though early voting has already begun. According to a recent poll, Mamdani enjoys support from 43 percent of the public, signaling a competitive race.
