Daniel Pearl murder case: SC orders release of all accused including Omar Sheikh

ISLAMABAD: In the murder case of American journalist Daniel Pearl, the Supreme Court upheld the decision of the Sindh High Court and acquitted all the accused. Appeals by the provincial government and Daniel Pearl’s parents were also rejected. The court allowed the second appeal of the Sindh government to stay the release of the accused.

The verdict in the murder case of American journalist Daniel Pearl was announced by a three-member bench headed by Justice Mushir Alam. The court ruled that if the accused were not wanted in any other case, they should be released immediately, a detailed verdict would be issued later. A member of the bench disagreed with the decision.

On the other hand, a separate bench headed by Justice Umar Ata Bandial heard the appeal of the provincial government to stop the release of the accused. Advocate General Sindh argued that Ahmed Omar Sheikh had links with banned organizations. I have given it to the court. There is evidence but it is not possible to prove it in the court.

Justice Umar Ata Bandial said that the material given to the Supreme Court has not been presented in any forum before. How to review the information which has never come on the record? Justice Muneeb Akhtar said in his remarks that the government has never declared Ahmed Omar Sheikh as an enemy agent. No one can deny the war on terror. No one knows when the war on terror will end. It is also dangerous to call citizens enemies of the country.

Advocate General Sindh said that the country fighting against the state is an enemy. The court granted the appeal of the Sindh government to stop the release of the accused and adjourned the hearing indefinitely while suspending the decision of the Sindh High Court. On appeal, the court reserved judgment.
