Deployment of army for election security begins in Punjab

Home department says foolproof security arrangements are being finalized across province.

LAHORE: The caretaker Punjab government has started deploying army troops for security of the general elections to be held on February 8.

The home department of Punjab on Tuesday said that army troops have arrived in Lahore, Kasur and Sheikhupra and were being deployed in different parts of the cities while troops were on way to Mandi Bahauddin and Chakwal.

A day before the polling day in February 8, deployment of army personnel would be finalized to ensure foolproof security during the elections till the completion of the process.

On January 23, the caretaker federal cabinet approved a summary for the deployment of army troops for security during the general elections across the country.

The summary seeking requisition of 277,000 army officers and personnel was moved by the Ministry of Interior. The troops will be deployed outside all polling stations where they remain on a standby.

Army is also being deployed in Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakthunkhwa. Security situation in the provinces of Khyber Pakthunkhwa and Balochistan has been poor as terrorists have been attacking security forces and police without a check. 

A day earlier, 10 policemen were martyred and six others injured when terrorists attacked the police station of Darban in Dera Ismail Khan.
