Human smuggler jailed in Libya boat tragedy case

Convict also fined an amount of Rs1.4 million by court in Gujranwala.

GUJRANWALA: A court here today sentenced a human smuggler to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs1.4 million.

The case against the human smuggler was heard by special court judge central Muhammad Naeem.

The convict, Shehzad Elahi, had taken Rs2.4 million from Ahsan, a resident of Sialkot, promising him to send him via air to Italy. After receiving the amount, however, he transported Ahsan to Libya in a ship instead.

From Libya, the job seeker was trying to reach Europe in a boat when it capsized, killing him along with other people last year.

The human smuggler was arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency and the case was registered against him on the complaint of Shahzad.

The human smuggler initially denied allegations but the prosecution presented evidence before the court on the basis of which he was convicted.
