ISLAMABAD: Lawyers in Rawalpindi and Islamabad held protests against the appointment of new judges during which they clashed with police and blocked roads.
In view of the protest, heavy police force had been deployed in the Supreme Court premises and all roads to the building except Margalla Road were closed.
Due to the closure of the entrance to the Red Zone, there was gridlocks at Kashmir Chowk, Serena Chowk, Nadra, Marriott, Express Chowk and T-Cross Bari Imam. Moreover, Jinnah Underpass was also closed by placing containers.
As the lawyers were not allowed entry into the Red Zone, a scuffle broke out between the lawyers and the police at Serena Chowk. After failing to enter the Red Zone, the lawyers blocked the Srinagar Highway.
Meanwhile, the police closed the entrance door reserved for lawyers at the Supreme Court and the police officials told the lawyers that they had orders not to allow any lawyer entry into the court premises.
In view of the protest, the operation of Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus Service was also suspended from Faiz Ahmed Faiz Station to Pak Secretariat.
The metro administration has said that the bus service from Rawalpindi Saddar station to Faiz Ahmed Faiz station was open and the bus service in Islamabad haf been closed for security reasons.
