PTI marchers approaching D Chowk, army on alert

Protesters defy cordons and police shelling; Bushra Bibi leads march, Gandapur not in sight.

ISLAMABAD: The PTI marchers on Tuesday noon crossed Zero Point blockades defying police cordons and shelling and moved towards D Chowk where they plan to stage a sit-in till acceptance of their demands.

The main demand include the immediate release of PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan who is incarcerated in the Adiala jail of Rawalpindi for over a year now.

The protesters were being led by Bushra Bibi, wife of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

On the other hand, army has been called in in the federal capital under Article 245 of the Constitution to maintain law and order. The army has been deployed at D Chowk with directions to check the marchers there.

Meanwhile, routine life at a standstill in Islamabad on the third consecutive day with all main roads and markets closed. Educational institutions have also been closed in the twin cities.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said that the government was taking utmost care to handle the situation, but warned the PTI not to force it to take action. He warned that the government would use all its resources to maintain peace.

He said that the government had time and again warned that anyone coming to D Chowk and holding protest there would be arrested.
