US embassy delegation meets murder convict

Meeting held for about 30 minutes in office of Adiala jail deputy superintendent.

ISLAMABAD: A three-member delegation from the US embassy in Islamabad on Thursday visited the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, according to media reports.

The delegation consisted of one American and two Pakistani employees of the embassy. They held a meeting with a murder convict in the office of the deputy jail superintendent for about 30 minutes. It is not clear what was the purpose of the visit of the delegation from the embassy. 

The convict, Zahir Jaffar, had murdered Noor Muqadam, daughter of a former diplomat, in Islamabad in July 2021. 

A sessions court in Islamabad on February 25, 2022, sentenced Jaffar to death. The convict was also found guilty of rape and awarded to 25 years in jail and fined Rs200,000.

The murder convict is a dual national of the US and has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court. Mukadam, 27, went to Jaffer’s house on July 19, 2021, where she was murdered by Jaffar.
