48 killed after oil tanker collides with truck in Nigeria

Officials say oil tanker exploded after hitting truck carrying passengers and cattle.

At least 48 people were killed and over 20 others injured in an accident involving an oil tanker in Nigera, authorities said on Monday.

The accident was reported from the Agaie area in north-central Niger state.

The authorities said the oil tanker exploded after colluding head-on with a truck that was carrying passengers and cattle. As a result, the oil tanker caught fire and its flames engulfed the truck and other vehicles.

According to media reports, the officials have confirmed the death of 48 people, adding over 20 others were injured and some of them were in critical condition in hospitals.

In 2022, over 550 people lost their lives in oil tanker accidents across Nigeria. The authorities have failed to ensure safety measures for the oil tankers.
