GUJRANWALA: The city of Gujranwala has overtaken Lahore to become the most polluted city in Pakistan, according to the latest air quality report.

The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has soared to a hazardous level of 379, making it difficult for residents to breathe amid thick smog.

Across Punjab, the situation remains severe, with no noticeable improvement in air conditions. Lahore’s overall AQI was recorded at 346, while certain areas reported much higher readings — 595 in Gulberg, 557 at the Civil Secretariat, and 547 in Iqbal Town. Faisalabad’s AQI reached 377, and Multan recorded 276, all within the unhealthy range.

Health experts have advised people to stay indoors as much as possible and to wear protective masks outdoors. The increasing smog has heightened health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory problems.

Environmental analysts warn that without urgent measures to control emissions from vehicles, factories, and agricultural burning, the air quality across Punjab may continue to worsen in the coming weeks.
