JCP approves elevation of six high court judges to SC

ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan on Monday elevated six justices of the high courts to the Supreme Court.
A meeting of the Judicial Commission chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi was held to consider the appointment of eight new judges to the apex court.
According to media reports, members of the commission demanded that the meeting should be postponed until the decision on the 26th constitutional amendment pending in the Supreme Court. As a result, a voting was held and a majority of the members decided to continue theĀ  meeting.
According to media reports, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Muneeb Akhtar boycotted the meeting while Barrister Gauhar and Barrister Ali Zafar of the PTI also boycotted the session.
The judicial commission approved the names of Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Hashim Khan Kakar, Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim, Sindh High Court Chief Justice Shafi Siddiqui and Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Amir Farooq for elevation to the Supreme Court.

Justice Salahuddin of the Sindh High Court and Justice Shakeel Ahmed of the Peshawar High Court were also cleared for appointment as judges of the Supreme Court.

The appointment of Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb as an acting judge of the Supreme Court was approved under Article 181. The matter of appointing a judge from the Lahore High Court to the Supreme Court has been postponed.
