SC direct ECP in its preserved opinion to take steps for transparency in Senate Election

Supreme Court of Pakistan has given a safe opinion on the presidential reference filed regarding holding the Senate election through open ballot.

A five-member larger bench headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan heard the presidential reference on holding the Senate election through open ballot and reserved its opinion last week after the lawyers’ arguments were completed.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed heard the preserved opinion on the presidential reference in Court Room No. 1 of the Supreme Court. The court ruled that Senate elections are held under the Constitution and the law.

The court said that it was the job of the Election Commission to eradicate corruption from the electoral process. The Election Commission can take all steps for transparent elections, all institutions are bound to co-operate with the Election Commission, the vote cannot remain secret forever.

A five-member bench of the apex court gave its opinion on the presidential reference in the ratio of four to one.
