KARACHI: Sarim Burney, known for his right activities and philanthropic work, has been handed over to the Federal Investigation Agency on remand for investigation into allegations of child trafficking against him.
A day earlier, Burney was arrested after his arrival at Karachi airport from abroad. Authorities said that the arrest was made on the complaint of the US that Burney was involved in trafficking to US children after adopting them in Pakistan.
The FIA later registered a case against him under sections 420 (Cheating and dishonestly, inducing delivery of property), 468 (Forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (Using as genuine a forged document), 109 (abetment) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Sections 3 (trafficking in persons), 4 (aggravating circumstances) and 5 (abetment and criminal conspiracy) of the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act by 2018.
Today, the anti-human smuggling cell of the FIA produced Burney in the court of judicial magistrate east where his counsel pleaded that he may be discharged from the case. However, the court rejected the plea and handed him over to the FIA on physical remand for investigation for two days.
Officials said that Burney after registration of the case confessed to his involvement in trafficking of children abroad.
