Pakistan, Afghan Taliban Second Round of Talks in Türkiye Today

ISLAMABAD: The second round of crucial talks between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban is scheduled to take place in Türkiye today (Saturday).

Both sides are expected to discuss the establishment of a credible and verifiable monitoring mechanism to counter the threat of terrorism along their shared border.

The talks have been confirmed by Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson, Tahir Andrabi, and Afghan Taliban spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid.

According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the meeting aims to prevent terrorist attacks originating from Afghan soil and to safeguard Pakistani lives. The spokesperson stressed that while border crossings remain closed, “saving Pakistani lives is more important than trade.”

The discussions in Istanbul will focus on formulating a clear and mutually verifiable mechanism to monitor and prevent cross-border terrorist activities. Pakistan reiterated its commitment to supporting a “strong, transparent, and verifiable framework” for counterterrorism cooperation.

On the Afghan side, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that a delegation led by Deputy Interior Minister Haji Najib has departed for Türkiye to participate in the talks.

The upcoming round follows earlier negotiations in Doha, mediated by Qatar and Türkiye, which resulted in a temporary ceasefire between the two sides.
